Ballet Hartford’s Summer Intensive offers pre-professional and professional dancers the highest caliber of classical ballet training with world renowned instructors, augmented by a rich diversity of classes and performance experience. The Intensive is designed to build technical strength, encourage artistic exploration and promote human flourishing.  

Program Overview

The Summer Intensive provides a supportive environment that fosters physical and artistic challenge. Six days of intensive dance combine technique and repertory as well the opportunity to forge community and friendships with your fellow dancers.

Class Offerings

Ballet and pointe technique, classical variations, modern, repertoire and contemporary.  Faculty include Silas Farley (New York City Ballet), Lars Nelson (New York City Ballet), Rachel Hutsell (New York City Ballet) and Ballet Hartford Company Artists.

PAYMENT SCHEDULE AND INFORMATION:

  1. Advance Registration due June 29. Standard Registration due July 22nd or as long as space is available.
  2. REFUNDS: No refunds will be issued if we do not receive cancellation notification by the Monday preceding the start of your session. There is a $375 fee for cancellations after July 22nd.
  3. There will be a charge of $25 for all returned checks.
  4. All monies must be paid prior to the start of classes on July 29th. There are no exceptions.
  5. All fees must be paid in U.S. dollars.

Requirements

  1. Must be at least 12 years old.
  2. Female applicants must have a minimum of 3 consecutive years of ballet training and 1 year of pointe since the age of 8.
  3. Male applicants must have a minimum of 2 years of ballet training.
  4. All applicants must be currently in dance training and be able to dance four to five hours daily, six days a week.
  5. Application/Registration form (available online).
  6. Non-refundable Registration Fee $25.00.
  7. A clear, unobstructed first arabesque profile en pointe for ladies, demi-pointe for men. Leotard and tights only, no skirts or costumes, please.  No larger than 5″ x 7″.  Please email to artisticdirector@ballethartford.com in jpg format.

Dancers are required to bring  their own sack lunches and snacks with them every day of the Intensive. There is access to a small kitchen and refrigerator at the studio.

 

Transportation

It is recommended that out of town participants fly into Hartford Connecticut’s Bradley International Airport. All are responsible for their own transportation from the airport to the place they are staying as well as to and from the studio each day. Ballet Hartford does not provide transportation. 

Performance

A performance is held at the end of the 1-week Intensive; all Intensive participants will participate in presenting Ballet Hartford repertory learned during the Intensive.

Is an audition required?

No audition is necessary.

What requirements are there for the pictures due with the Application?

A clear, unobstructed first arabesque profile en pointe for ladies, demi-pointe for men. Leotard and tights only, no skirts or costumes, please.  One headshot photo. Professional photos not necessary.

What is the cost of attending the Summer Dance Intensive?

Advanced Registration: $25 Registration Fee + $575 Tuition = $600 Total
Standard Registration: $25 Registration Fee + $645 Tuition = $670 Total

How will I know if my Application/Registration Form has been received?

Ballet Hartford will send you a confirmation email upon the receipt of your Registration Form. Please make sure to clearly print a current/valid email address on any forms sent to our office.

Is there a dress code for the Summer Dance Intensive?

There is no required dress code. All dancers are asked to dress modestly and appropriately. Attire Guidelines: Ladies, pink full-length tights and black leotards with pink ballet or pointe shoes. Gentleman, white t-shirts, black leggings, black tights, black bike shorts, and black or white socks with matching ballet shoes.  

How do I make a tuition payment?

Payments can be made online, through our website. We also accept checks, money order, or cashier’s check.

What is the daily schedule like at Ballet Hartford’s Summer Intensive?

SAMPLE SCHEDULE:

10:00am-12:00pm: Ballet Technique Class

12:00-1:30pm: Pointe/Variations/Contemporary/Modern

130-2:00: Lunch (Participants should bring a sack lunch and snacks daily)

2:00-400: Repertoire

4:00-5:00: Rehearsal

5:00-6:00: Q&A with Guest Artists

What kind of housing is provided?

Ballet Hartford does not provide housing. We recommend the Courtyard Marriot Hotel Hartford Farmington in Farmington, CT.

Minors who wish to stay at the hotel must be accompanied by and room with a legal parent or guardian during their entire stay.

*A shuttle to and from the hotel will NOT be provided for out of town participants. All participants are responsible for their own transportation.

Dancers are required to bring their own personal toiletries and their own sack lunches and snacks with them every day of the Intensive. There is access to a small kitchen and refrigerator at the studio.

Is living in host homes required for the Summer Dance Intensive?

No. Students may stay with friends or family in the area.  However, ALL students are required to attend all activities, including evening activities (such as Q&A and performances).  Ballet Hartford does not supervise housing arrangement of students staying with friends and family in the area.

How many pairs of pointe shoes should a dancer bring to the summer intensive?

The number of pointe shoes needed for the Summer Dance Intensive depends on several factors: the strength of the dancer’s feet, the brand of shoe, how often shoes are to be worn and humidity. Participants will be on pointe at least 3 days a week, if not more, in moderately humid weather. It is recommended that Dancers bring a minimum of two pair of pointe shoes with them for the week long Intensive.

Is there a performance at the end of the Summer Dance Intensive?

Yes, there is a performance at the end of the Intensive. The performance will be held at Ballet Hartford, 224 Farmington Ave on Saturday, August 3rd at 4:00pm. Family and friends are invited to join us! The performance is free of charge.
